<br />
For 2014 I am renewing my efforts to make costuming masterpieces, but I'll be reporting on my efforts from a new home: http://www.faithkingwriter.com/<br />
<br />
For those of you who have left inquiries regarding the Rapunzel embroidery transfers. Unfortunately, the site where I was hosting the files has been discontinueed and I seem to have NOT preserved my .pdf copies. So I'm trying to find what I did with the original drawings, and so far I've come up with zero there too. So far.<br />
<br />
So sorry!<br />
<br />
In any case, the new website is one central stop for all my goals and plans for the year, and, hopefully, news about the books I'm working hard to get published.<br />
<br />
All the sewing-related stuff will be under the tags "sewing adventures" or "costuming adventures" (or both). <a href="http://www.faithkingwriter.com/1/post/2014/01/sewing-and-costuming-goals-2014.html">Here is the 2014 kickstart entry</a>. I've recently joined the smartphone generation, so I'll also be better about pictures.<br />
<br />
So, anyway. I'll leave this site up but I'm closing down comments as best I can.Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-10346676911127874272013-07-16T13:00:00.000-04:002013-07-16T13:00:03.091-04:00A new costume for 2013Hi there! Obviously, I haven't updated this blog in eons, mostly because I've taken a year off of any big costume projects, choosing instead to focus on my writing.<br />
<br />
However, something came across my radar that I simply cannot resist taking on as a new costume for Dragon Con 2013.<br />
<br />
I will let it speak for itself:<br />

<br />
Some friends of ours from church have a home away from home in southern Ohio-- a small cottage with all the amenities. About a half a mile up the hill in the woods they also have a one-room, furnished log cabin that the husband built himself as a hobby.<br />
<br />
Well, my mother and I got invited to stay there this weekend for a relaxing getaway. I took my sewing along, naturally, since I needed to finish the trim on the Red Cloak. Thinking about these woods and this cabin, I took a gamble and folded up the rest of my costume as well.<br />
<br />
In a mad rush Sunday morning I finished off the last of the trim, hand-basted the right side together, and then we climbed up the hill to that cabin and did some wonderful shots. I will let them speak for themselves!<br />

<br />
I splurged. I meant to try and be economical and find something sufficient, but it was not to be. I found this red wool suiting (it was on sale, but I still don't want to admit what I paid for it), and it was so perfect-- the color, the drape, the heft. I could not resist. I bought the blasted red wool for real.<br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsiQQoV8vJDczdqFITJgaGVSyhDvgKQILRmpXsw50IdZ_KZFmWHc8MRMR7Bxq0N8X0p7qkVUSwNdkPdnw_c-DkmpkHH0NAwoKxlOa7g028ZL5KUhP3tS4xGkquCbuCo6tO2uD6QohC-Ujd/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsiQQoV8vJDczdqFITJgaGVSyhDvgKQILRmpXsw50IdZ_KZFmWHc8MRMR7Bxq0N8X0p7qkVUSwNdkPdnw_c-DkmpkHH0NAwoKxlOa7g028ZL5KUhP3tS4xGkquCbuCo6tO2uD6QohC-Ujd/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-10.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
That part was expensive, but easy.<br />
<br />
The cloak construction itself was easy enough too. I used McCall's M6420 because I already had it and I figured a cloak is a cloak. Eh... I don't know who this cloak was designed for. Maybe Darth Vader wearing linebacker shoulderpads. I ended up reducing the curvature of the shoulders severely on this pattern. I also narrowed the panels and it doesn't quite close, but it's supposed to hang nicely open, so that was just my call.<br />
<br />
The next adventure was the side slits for her arms to go through. At first I thought they'd be easy enough to add to the middle sides of the cloak, until I looked more closely at the pictures and realized the slits were on the <i>inside</i> of the trim, closer to the body. This required some creative finagling but I made it work. <br />
<br />
The next problem became what to do about the mystery trim on her cloak. Can <i>you</i> tell what it's made of? Because I certainly cannot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWmOGZC9q-zDRxVyn1_roTTzS57JvGqONphz9F5LRdO4Z2kTskiIYk0LtkJ_9SchXzIdELNd91gsfuDKMOCvtN0kE7mySCEysyWEWAIRbxTDthKSpX1U6E2Pw4gvLFUBBOVihtlyDDIfC9/s1600/Flagged-0.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="574" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWmOGZC9q-zDRxVyn1_roTTzS57JvGqONphz9F5LRdO4Z2kTskiIYk0LtkJ_9SchXzIdELNd91gsfuDKMOCvtN0kE7mySCEysyWEWAIRbxTDthKSpX1U6E2Pw4gvLFUBBOVihtlyDDIfC9/s1600/Flagged-0.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the best picture I could come up with on short notice, but I have consulted quite a few, and best I can tell it's unspun wool that's been tacked down onto the cloak. And some embroidery. And the cloak itself has been distressed in between so the whole thing is very fuzzy.<br />
<br />
<br />
After roaming around JoAnn's and considering several options, I finally bought three skeins of super fuzzy yarn in dark purple, lavender, and white. Someday I will stop needing to buy things in lavender.<br />
<br />
Then I scrounged through the sewing supplies I inherited from my mother and found a lovely, blunt tapestry needle with a big huge eye.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF51oFAnjMHjeX2CcifGKuHO3HjiSRdVTjRNiAUFwwztxF3KDocw7dQxCtcyzAv_z1sqphlzKaZg9rq87-d8p9eu6YHiUHtbl7cj5J0usiz3ev_NiVgRUQRT2_lFhwzRP80nDGxP5HcLvk/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF51oFAnjMHjeX2CcifGKuHO3HjiSRdVTjRNiAUFwwztxF3KDocw7dQxCtcyzAv_z1sqphlzKaZg9rq87-d8p9eu6YHiUHtbl7cj5J0usiz3ev_NiVgRUQRT2_lFhwzRP80nDGxP5HcLvk/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-15.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used the needle to make willy-nilly patterns along the border like so.... (the white trim was very minimal)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipN9ws78naZ_ML5GEXHZkougJ3IU-5Pdzbun0b3Y4KGzGuCadSDlqA0hgR_skfZP9qoiujO_4dvHNQsdphlkyCxfeblSFI16u5k5FSTB6WeVw-axl_7CLeb5b3C7z0x7y1oJsHbbKMgC0f/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipN9ws78naZ_ML5GEXHZkougJ3IU-5Pdzbun0b3Y4KGzGuCadSDlqA0hgR_skfZP9qoiujO_4dvHNQsdphlkyCxfeblSFI16u5k5FSTB6WeVw-axl_7CLeb5b3C7z0x7y1oJsHbbKMgC0f/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-13.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A look at the full cloak after the first night of yarn experiments.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj8eaNC6Jh7jBCEuScj-nLa0tvaIlXyY9hi7rf0vNIQeT_cJ6BzuoVqepeix29PzKoq_Yp9hWAJhp59rLCz__09g39YKcnvPd1X26EJSRZJ6uAQWxZRZ9FZX-v3ge9QoEsll9ThIzE3_SN/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj8eaNC6Jh7jBCEuScj-nLa0tvaIlXyY9hi7rf0vNIQeT_cJ6BzuoVqepeix29PzKoq_Yp9hWAJhp59rLCz__09g39YKcnvPd1X26EJSRZJ6uAQWxZRZ9FZX-v3ge9QoEsll9ThIzE3_SN/s1600/Red+Riding+Hood+Progress-14.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I put all the trim on first before sewing back the edge of the border so it's a nice, tidy finish with no understitching showing through.<br />
<br />
And those are all my notes on cloak construction! Onward to the main event!Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-20225258858872759822012-07-24T18:36:00.001-04:002012-07-24T18:36:51.091-04:00The Tale of Rose Red, Part 5<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There have been many happenings in costuming world of late, folks. The Red Riding Hood effort is coming along nicely. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For example, I finished the vest!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Followed the pattern, added 3 inches of length, disregarded the eyelets)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought the garment clasps <a href="http://www.bymichelle.com/clasps.html">here</a>. Specifically "Tudor Rose" in antique pewter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You know how sometimes you take a picture by accident and it looks more brilliant than anything you could've ever gotten by trying. <br />
(1) Shorten the sleeve by six inches. <br />
<br />
(2) Narrow the sleeve by two and a half inches.<br />
<br />
(3) Cut the sleeve into strips based on the following measurements (from the bottom of the seam). <br />
<br />
Base (cuff) 4 1/2"<br />
Lace (bottom) 4"<br />
Center (narrow) 2"<br />
Lace (top) 4"<br />
Shoulder (remainder)<br />
<br />
I also lengthened the bottom of the skirt by three inches to make sure it was long enough to emulate Red's blouse.<br />

<br />
Last night was a magical night on the sewing front. I called a friend to ask if I could raid her elastic supply since I needed elastic to proceed and I didn't feel like driving all the way to the nearest place I could get some.<br />
<br />
She brought some 1/4" and 1/8" samples. Sandry has a cool stitch that allows me to zig zag elastic straight onto a gather without having to worry about casing and the like, and I'd already practiced using it some weeks earlier. So after a quick trial run with the crinkle chiffon fabric I was able to finish off the garment in the following steps:<br />
<br />
(1) I narrow hem serged the edges of the cuffs.<br />
(2) Gathered the cuffs and sewed down the elastic.<br />
(3) Assembled the four pieces of the peasant blouse (back, front, two sleeves). I believe I may have mentioned in an earlier post about how much I adore the simplicity of this shirt's construction. Or maybe that was just on Facebook.<br />
(4) Narrow hem serged the edge of the neckline and hem.<br />
(5) Did a test gather of the neckline and a fitting.<br />
<br />
Now, here is where the turn of events took me by surprise. My game plan has always been up to this point to build a casing for the neck, make a drawstring, and finish off the shirt in that way (see reference photo). But as soon as I put the shirt on it became apparent that even were I to do all that, it wouldn't really resemble Red's blouse exactly because her shirt is <i>much</i> more gathered than mine will ever be. I needed about twice the shirt.<br />
<br />
What I did have was lovely and "close enough". I also felt emboldened by my success with the elastic on the cuffs so instead of bothering with casing and all that extra work, I just took the rest of the 1/8" elastic and did the same thing to the neckline. The result is what you see at the top of this post.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidYaNhxBlkdnbb7KMVeHsg639XZIORRo87PQZI4jMTo73VKqW0UKDYxbxMdCxTVB60FMY9U71D4U5ArEuAb1jDYf-xpmSowPn3teU7tG-s12NFFABWhibYZjlMMiCpGjYCF4FXxbqy0TGf/s1600/RRHBlouse2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidYaNhxBlkdnbb7KMVeHsg639XZIORRo87PQZI4jMTo73VKqW0UKDYxbxMdCxTVB60FMY9U71D4U5ArEuAb1jDYf-xpmSowPn3teU7tG-s12NFFABWhibYZjlMMiCpGjYCF4FXxbqy0TGf/s640/RRHBlouse2.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(If you squint you can kinda sorta see the zig zag stitches that attach the elastic to the fabric)</div>
<br />
<br />
Technically, I still have to add a faux bow to "complete" the shirt, but that's an afterthought.<br />
<br />
So after probably four complete days' worth of work testing the sleeves, practicing special stitches on my new machine, and learning new techniques on my serger, all my hard work came together in one surprisingly productive evening and a <i>finished garment.</i><br />
<br />
The even better news? I chose starting with the blouse because I knew all this learning and trial and error would probably make it the most difficult of all of Red's ensemble for me. So, theoretically, it's all downhill from here!<br />
<i> </i><br />
Let's check the to-do list:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<strike>I. Blouse</strike></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
II. Vest</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
III. Skirt</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
IV. Cape</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
V. Petticoat</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
VI. Boots, Gloves</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
VII. Hair, Basket, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So I'll be eagerly working on the vest, next, which is #2 in intimidation factor because of the Very Special and Expensive fabric that I bought. It's also my first time using boning as called for by a pattern, but that doesn't really worry me. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First, though, I'll work up a summary reference post on how I made the blouse (including specific adjustments, etc), should anyone wish to emulate my take on it.</div>Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-66859516837097669302012-06-25T20:07:00.000-04:002012-06-25T20:14:21.375-04:00The Tale of Rose Red, Part 3<i>The Music Man</i> is over! It was a good time overall, but I'm glad the demanding rehearsal and performance schedules are through and I can return my energies to fannish pursuits. At least until the end of August when auditions for <i>Little Women</i> are coming up!<br />
<br />
In the past three days I have made splendid progress on Red Riding Hood, particularly finishing off my trial and error with the sleeves and getting them all ready to go for the final product.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzIIIPX3mTGapXu4MY5-Z5VRZ2Z35fJ5SfXgXctAFzM9Js0_S8H8iIIcFN39-1tFdc25D8zfCMqMpXaoeDmhH_0Wbm0cRLoWtx26-KYLVdcUu4J4yPKqkVn9ta_SV_pJoHQ-qT9tCyq9n-/s1600/SLEEVE10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzIIIPX3mTGapXu4MY5-Z5VRZ2Z35fJ5SfXgXctAFzM9Js0_S8H8iIIcFN39-1tFdc25D8zfCMqMpXaoeDmhH_0Wbm0cRLoWtx26-KYLVdcUu4J4yPKqkVn9ta_SV_pJoHQ-qT9tCyq9n-/s320/SLEEVE10.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When we last left off, the test sleeve looked nice, but wasn't quite
close enough to the source costume for my liking. The lace sections were too low on the sleeve compared to Red's.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj16r-iVF8h3IC1j2dyKWdxm0Fm2OMajwyRpcpX3dfBnEzKJKUQMPC98OaDZzj2BxfW9RgEJfxrKxM_1w3sMgQeRoXoDX6P-JXCsor6LRiZJ-Ag94Bq-t8VVw7J3heXE9PTNnYBFJYp6am0/s1600/Sleeve27.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj16r-iVF8h3IC1j2dyKWdxm0Fm2OMajwyRpcpX3dfBnEzKJKUQMPC98OaDZzj2BxfW9RgEJfxrKxM_1w3sMgQeRoXoDX6P-JXCsor6LRiZJ-Ag94Bq-t8VVw7J3heXE9PTNnYBFJYp6am0/s320/Sleeve27.jpg" width="240" /></a> </div>
I cut everything out again, this time moving all the dividers up four inches. After patiently joining and inserting into the test blouse, I was pleased to find the lace fell more or less in the right places this time around. It was still too long and too poofy, though, so I made a few more adjustments to my pattern based on that. (Didn't bother cutting out and testing a third time, though) <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6wnhMMRb_n6r_3ugcOa7WokxHtDGJ9MKhyQkanNN5aPcY88jvWzSbw3rdjZDLS6DPC8Kq-8cvP-EJu107Kc_slAC3W3nu12gOWaGDE06TvdZXOb_foHI_LmSC17ichlrv1C7BNt4VQdV/s1600/Sleeve23.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6wnhMMRb_n6r_3ugcOa7WokxHtDGJ9MKhyQkanNN5aPcY88jvWzSbw3rdjZDLS6DPC8Kq-8cvP-EJu107Kc_slAC3W3nu12gOWaGDE06TvdZXOb_foHI_LmSC17ichlrv1C7BNt4VQdV/s400/Sleeve23.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The final custom pattern. The darker stripe in the middle is from where I narrowed the sleeve by 2 1/2 inches. I also cut the same amount from the length of the sleeve, taking it from the top half of the fifth section of the pattern. Once nice thing about narrowing the sleeve is that the original sleeve pattern was too big to fold my pattern material and cut 2 simultaneously. Now I was able to do just that (yay, convenience!!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTWH388FhmWn34BcP7C4yfzPTGoGzUQu4lHbPKB8tJoNOwHUImThOc_L2uAh_03OjQJ30tB3CISNMdbVUPGBSYzSbBYoE0oAOpCOf0fjBMvU8hiptLv2Hp57L5UDWwADVsXxMtmYMDYE_2/s320/Sleeve21.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<br />
The next step was to cut out the layers in both my "base" fabric and the lace I bought to go in between. Since neither of these fabrics has an easily discernible "wrong"side, I wrote out a label for all ten pieces as shown above to make sure I didn't get the pieces for the two sleeves mixed up until they were assembled.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihQl5QftHFjIym6gdLwCeJgMz5di11EY00QQzRlNVOh4TJeuwxfkGDjzStwtsq4jNIF9RJaD0zrwjUizXL6SyddL6Q4nvHuyBqLBSw9HXWzb3LsvvrPLaM2STqRlRZG_WDb5JqathCv4b9/s1600/Sleeve22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihQl5QftHFjIym6gdLwCeJgMz5di11EY00QQzRlNVOh4TJeuwxfkGDjzStwtsq4jNIF9RJaD0zrwjUizXL6SyddL6Q4nvHuyBqLBSw9HXWzb3LsvvrPLaM2STqRlRZG_WDb5JqathCv4b9/s320/Sleeve22.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, I used the serger to finish the edges of each strip with a narrow rolled hem. This took almost a full day of reading, experimenting, and one case of getting up and walking away in order to cool down before beginning again. It's the first time I've used Sergio's narrow rolled hem application, and for the most part I did a good job of allowing myself to learn as well as to apply. As usual, I made it extra hard on myself by choosing two tricky fabrics to work with. As you can see above, the base fabric is very stretchy, and the lace comes with its own set of problems. But Sergio and I worked together and eventually got it sorted.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6wnhMMRb_n6r_3ugcOa7WokxHtDGJ9MKhyQkanNN5aPcY88jvWzSbw3rdjZDLS6DPC8Kq-8cvP-EJu107Kc_slAC3W3nu12gOWaGDE06TvdZXOb_foHI_LmSC17ichlrv1C7BNt4VQdV/s1600/Sleeve23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjU_X67en25i0qxtgh9_vjsSPm52_2CWJByTlPVd2vCn2fxSrOR6HG88NwwdI02v1Ih1dsC_7_muSKtokteM38O_33pab2-kIj_RJSHBrqAw9RofzkpWweXH5EK5_CY_U4sP5nmOoHOSPT/s1600/Sleeve24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjU_X67en25i0qxtgh9_vjsSPm52_2CWJByTlPVd2vCn2fxSrOR6HG88NwwdI02v1Ih1dsC_7_muSKtokteM38O_33pab2-kIj_RJSHBrqAw9RofzkpWweXH5EK5_CY_U4sP5nmOoHOSPT/s320/Sleeve24.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
One interesting side effect of serging the stretchy fabric was that the fabric, well, <i>stretched</i>. That is, it stretched out to where the pieces ended up being longer than their originating fabrics, as shown above. Still, far better than if the serger had somehow shrunk them I suppose.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvHxTU7AcdwknsC0kaRJB79D5Na_WMAs6lu9vO_8auUN3tcNfTQpO0etsSAd0E5NVZepsu9M2ad0IUxcF75lODxmlmhb5PxbmNDHvdPY844l8moniyKgPnuv03ZsksYSsBVAjt6mQakbHV/s1600/Sleeve25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvHxTU7AcdwknsC0kaRJB79D5Na_WMAs6lu9vO_8auUN3tcNfTQpO0etsSAd0E5NVZepsu9M2ad0IUxcF75lODxmlmhb5PxbmNDHvdPY844l8moniyKgPnuv03ZsksYSsBVAjt6mQakbHV/s320/Sleeve25.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I joined the pieces together as shown above, always with the lace on top for pinning purposes, and then used two rows of top stitching on the machine to complete the process. I got better and better at this as I went along, so my second sleeve is predictably better than the first, but they're both god enough for me to proceed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCmigW3BnJ_qDzTwnYhh1dnGZuT4ZHiTTj4NJ1FYS1iKxa45_f1SLKE60_Wszx5rPHtHQf8pkGuK1E-acNpEOGqpiSbWWATOurvMubc7QTol0o6-oMGzoERveNwJyUWLQn0SU89b9Tpo2q/s1600/Sleeve26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCmigW3BnJ_qDzTwnYhh1dnGZuT4ZHiTTj4NJ1FYS1iKxa45_f1SLKE60_Wszx5rPHtHQf8pkGuK1E-acNpEOGqpiSbWWATOurvMubc7QTol0o6-oMGzoERveNwJyUWLQn0SU89b9Tpo2q/s640/Sleeve26.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I haven't ironed them yet, but there they are! All assembled and deceptively simple-looking, given how many hours have been devoted to getting them right. But as usual, I've learned loads, in this case about working with new fabrics and five or seven new things about Sergio. Every minute worth it.<br />
<br />
Next up-- assembling the blouse! The biggest challenge will be constructing a casing for the drawstring, but compared to these sleeves, I'm optimistic.Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-34176824733853415772012-06-07T18:24:00.000-04:002012-06-07T18:24:03.586-04:00River Song: The Secret CostumeMy dearest readers, I have been sneaky. I have been working on a costume behind the scenes and not mentioned a word about it.<br />

Anybody around here like Doctor Who?<br />
<br />
How about the indomitable River Song?<br />

I've been wanting to make this costume for quite a while, and it actually ended up being my easiest project so far, sewing wise. It's also my first foray into wig-buying, as you can see below:<br />

<br />
For those doing River Song Byzantium dress research of their own, the pattern I used was <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2026-misses-plus-size-dresses.aspx">Simplicity 3827</a> (now being phased out). It's the same pattern I altered to make my Inara blouse! If I could start again, however, I wish I'd used <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-7500-misses-dresses-cynthia-rowley-collection.aspx">Simplicity 1801</a> instead. It has a cummerbund already incorporated into the pattern (I had to try and add mine on my own and it's kind of sloppy), as well as gathers at the shoulders and waist more in keeping with River's actual dress.<br />
<br />
Wig: <a href="http://www.maxwigs.com/40s-vamp-by-lacey-costume-wigs-p1534.html">Link </a><br />
<br />
There are more accessories I still need to keep my eye out for to "complete" this ensemble-- a handbag, a watch, a handheld scanner thingy (I'm thinking I might track down my old Game Boy Advance and give it a makeover for this) and a tiny gun/blow torch. For a girl dressed to the nines, River is sure prepared for anything!Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-71720456489988799082012-06-03T18:20:00.000-04:002012-06-25T19:38:28.428-04:00The Tale of Rose Red, Part 2Howdy, folks!<br />
<br />
Progress on Red Riding Hood is going slowly, only because I've been up to my neck in other pursuits, including an amazing long weekend in New York City last week, and the home stretch of rehearsals for my local theater company's production of <i>The Music Man</i>. Alas, until the first weekend of performances is over (June 15-17) I am resolved not to look at or think of any sewing projects. There just isn't enough time.<br />
<br />
However, I did manage to make a little headway into the sleeves for Red's blouse a few weeks ago, and thought since we're in such a dry spell I may as well put up a post about my scant efforts.<br />
<br />
The first thing I did was to make a test blouse per the pattern (Butterick 6196), to get an idea of where to start with my alterations.<br />
<br />

First off, may I just say that I <i>love</i> making peasant blouses? It was such a breeze! I also got to incorporate one of Sandry's special tricks, which is a stitch that allows you to put down elastic without needing to make casing (on the cuffs of the sleeves). The seam for attaching these sleeves is so much easier than the typical shoulder joint seam in modern sleeve styles. The vest is one I grabbed from my closet.<br />
<br />
The first issue, which I knew going in, is that the sleeves need to be shortened for Red's costume. By a LOT. The second thing is, they need lace layers.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsjaZS5tT0KO4iYU4x_EHqNNBmSkOQUdWXDEcqWP9sKaNuIWkvTTeXnBU7zJZrbr3D7JPVTujcW7IrJ4cTDGDKm1fKBJTEnPdnUMsvABcH8yGXbEzCjtWf9KYiXmupW9xhCozFY4s7HAHk/s1600/SLEEVE2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsjaZS5tT0KO4iYU4x_EHqNNBmSkOQUdWXDEcqWP9sKaNuIWkvTTeXnBU7zJZrbr3D7JPVTujcW7IrJ4cTDGDKm1fKBJTEnPdnUMsvABcH8yGXbEzCjtWf9KYiXmupW9xhCozFY4s7HAHk/s320/SLEEVE2.jpg" width="240" /></a> </div>
<br />
The first thing I did was shorten the pattern as shown above. I pulled one of the sleeves off of my test muslin blouse to use as a base for my new custom pattern. Also, note my beautiful new pattern weights. I have recently discovered the tricks of pattern weights and a cutting tool for cutting out patterns (I call it the pizza slicer thingy) instead of the traditional pin & scissors method, and I seriously wonder what was wrong with me for not discovering it sooner. Pinning and cutting is my least favorite part of sewing. So tedious! Now I don't have to do it anymore! This is a good thing for the overall quality of my work and my learning process too, because it means I'm more likely to take the time to do trial garments and get it right before cutting into my final fabric.<br />
<br />

After I cut out the shortened sleeve, I used my marking tools to map out the lace vs base sleeve layers on my new custom sleeve.<br />

This picture is upside-down. Whoops. But you get the idea (I don't feel like re-uploading it). Here are the individual pattern pieces cut out. I put LOTS of labels and markings to help me keep track of which was which.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7mQ0vX8YotnzXIyy3LyypxqLZ8aql4ayndo2O-XHOZT4QGMECfPVflHsxUCRoQBio7kQ0L6zy_XnjiOLqSPzo1XhBonJglhzU_WU6PRpA73z6ARmybV7ah6WJ6j40OfhSbbwWkxjnDUG8/s1600/SLEEVE6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7mQ0vX8YotnzXIyy3LyypxqLZ8aql4ayndo2O-XHOZT4QGMECfPVflHsxUCRoQBio7kQ0L6zy_XnjiOLqSPzo1XhBonJglhzU_WU6PRpA73z6ARmybV7ah6WJ6j40OfhSbbwWkxjnDUG8/s320/SLEEVE6.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
At first I thought I might be able to use the same piece for the two "lace" layers, since they were the same shape and width, but when I cut the sleeve pattern up, I realized that due to the flared nature of the sleeve, they're slightly different lengths, so it was good to keep both of them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIHbh3Nwlsr8KfNvUhsTY6LSaCPijegDFW_reKKdaDcjEOyid_F7tyJPC_t_nWLF2EeSTB6xqMB-8O4AL598IPHEFLLT6EKlwRztdytNuY73swqayEs4r815Hc-kUwZb7wvuXxKBNoR-J3/s1600/SLEEVE7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIHbh3Nwlsr8KfNvUhsTY6LSaCPijegDFW_reKKdaDcjEOyid_F7tyJPC_t_nWLF2EeSTB6xqMB-8O4AL598IPHEFLLT6EKlwRztdytNuY73swqayEs4r815Hc-kUwZb7wvuXxKBNoR-J3/s320/SLEEVE7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I cut out the base and lace layers and joined them together. Here is the resulting test sleeve.<br />
<br />
<br />

Almost all of my edges and seams were acceptably straight, except for the exception you can see above.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I attached the new test sleeve to the base of the peasant blouse. It looks pretty good, but unfortunately, it's not quite right. If you check against the reference photo, the lace layers should be much higher, starting closer to the shoulder. Also, it could still probably stand to be an inch or two shorter.<br />

<br />
I am going to need to repeat all of these steps and shift my measurements for where the different layers go.<br />
<br />
The good news is, I feel confident that my methodology is good to make a nice sleeve.<br />
<br />
The bad news is, I can't figure out where I put the brown paper sleeve pattern. I've been looking for it everywhere....<br />
<br />
<br />
And that's all the Red progress I'm going to have for another two weeks. I'm starting to get really impatient (and slightly panicked-- Dragon Con is a lot closer than it looks for a methodical sewer like me!) But I know from experience that trying to squeeze sewing in between the cracks of a busy schedule is a bad, BAD idea for me. It's all or nothing. I will wait until rehearsals are done and over and shift gears 100%.<br />
<br />
Hopefully I can find that pattern before then, though. Grrrr.<br />
<br />
ETA: Found it!! It was folded up and put away nicely in the pattern envelope. How unpredictably tidy of me...Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-14482862595056397142012-05-13T13:47:00.001-04:002012-05-13T13:52:29.239-04:00The Tale of Rose Red, Part 1Tonight is the season finale for <i>Once Upon a Time</i>. I'm so excited! I invited a couple of friends over. We're going to have a little Finale get-together. I even bought an apple pie for the occasion!<br />
<br />
In the meantime, I have officially gotten started on my Red Riding Hood costume, and thought I'd better get started on some progress blog entries too, before I get too far ahead of myself and don't feel like going back. I really want to be a good sewing blogger for the benefit of those looking for reference on my chosen projects!<br />
<br />
Today's post will be simple: Just some snapshots and discussions about the fabrics and the pattern I've chosen to use.<br />
<br />
This is my main reference photo:<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I decided to take the approach of "close enough" with this project. That is, I'm not killing myself looking for exact fabrics or anything of the kind, most especially in the case of the brocade on her vest. I'm organizing the pieces of the ensemble as follows, roughly in order of hardest to easiest:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I. Blouse</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
II. Vest</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
III. Skirt</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
IV. Cape</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
V. Petticoat</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
VI. Boots, Gloves</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
VII. Hair, Basket, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pattern I've chosen to use is <a href="http://butterick.mccall.com/b6196-products-2202.php?page_id=385">Butterick 6196</a>, since the corset/vest has the rounded neckline, front closure, and pointed waistline of Red's. The peasant blouse and skirt are also suitable, with a few slight tweaks.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCkI9vI95ILhhXdDRHUUL2FcL10T9eNWdFVFHyDUv4J-2PqMTg5XihMZEpvITCDyBs2UbNwCMIx1m2FUBP8KK7CDTHfdl0aGuWgWVk9pizVRpeIeQDdNUt5RBQWjPtBDAaEJel3h0UueNe/s1600/B6196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCkI9vI95ILhhXdDRHUUL2FcL10T9eNWdFVFHyDUv4J-2PqMTg5XihMZEpvITCDyBs2UbNwCMIx1m2FUBP8KK7CDTHfdl0aGuWgWVk9pizVRpeIeQDdNUt5RBQWjPtBDAaEJel3h0UueNe/s320/B6196.jpg" width="303" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For the blouse I bought a buttery-colored crinkle chiffon. It's a wee bit more yellow than Red's, but they didn't have the perfect shade of off-white available. I also bought 1/2 a yard of decorative tulle in the same shade for the lace layers on her sleeves. This detail on the sleeves, as well as some trim techniques on the neckline are the two reasons that the blouse, for all its simplicity in <i>basic</i> construction, is #1 on my difficulty level list. It's going to require the most patience to get it just right.</div>

The vest fabric was where I really splurged. As I suggested to myself in the <a href="http://threadmaiden.blogspot.com/2012/04/r-is-for-red-riding-hood.html">original introductory post to this project,</a> I combed up and down the aisles in the home decor fabrics section at JoAnn's until I found the black/brown/grey paisley tapestry fabric shown below. Since that dept of fabrics was 50% off (and I had a coupon above and beyond that), the price of the splurge was significantly less than what it could have been, but I'd still better make darn sure that I get everything right on the vest the first time around. I also bought some brown satin lining and boning as called for by the pattern. (Oh, and black ribbon for the edging, not pictured).</div>

<br />
The skirt fabric was an double dose of the "close enough" stance. Studying the picture above, it's clear to see, that the material for Red's skirt is super shiny and crinkly. I actually did find some bolts in the special occasion fabrics very like this, but the red they had was full on 100% red, not the wine/ cranberry/Christmasy kind of red I would consider that skirt to be. More than that, I really just don't want one quite <i>that</i> shiny. Although it's not easy to tell in the photo below, the fabric I found has its own luster, but subtler, and I prefer the color for myself. (Also, it was on clearance!)<br />

<br />
And that's all I have for now! I'm going to wait until all of these elements are finished before I proceed to buying fabric and materials for the cape. I've already made a test garment for the blouse and conducted one failed (but enlightening) attempt at constructing the sleeves with those lace layers.<br />

For the past couple of weeks there have been some drastic changes to the sewing scene at home. First I will inundate you with photos and quirky narration, and then I will tell the story.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First: This is my new sewing table. Yes, I have a new sewing table.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Quite possibly my favorite feature is the extensions that make the cutting table.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And, naturally, since I had an official cutting table, I got an official cutting mat.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(More on that later) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
AND SCARY FANCY ACCESSORIES!!!! </div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
...and auto-threading, and USB ports, and way more bells and whistles than I've ever dreamed of using. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yet.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Okay, story proper.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have a friend, Gina, who has become a real life sewing mentor of sorts. She helped me learn how to thread Sergio this past January, and she helped me put some cuffs on a project this past month (which I haven't featured yet because of the A-Z challenge theme going on). </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Both the table and Sandry used to belong to Gina. She's been looking to sell both for a while, and wanted them to go to good homes. I have been contemplating getting a new machine for a while, mostly because after almost two and a half years of sewing, I've finally decided that it's a hobby that's going to stick. Gina made me a good offer for the pair of them, and since her offer for the sewing machine was right around the price range I was looking for, I quickly took her up on it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Man, oh, man. I practically STOLE this machine.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I say this not as a gloat, but to sort of express my stunned astonishment. I sort of feel like I owe it to every struggling seamstress out there who dreams of bells and whistles to learn every last thing about it just to be WORTHY of the privilege of owning her.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The name Sandry comes from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sandrys-Book-Circle-Magic/dp/0590554085/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1336430051&sr=8-1">The Circle of Magic #1: Sandry's Book by Tamora Pierce</a>. Sandry is a high class lady indeed, in the story, kind and compassionate, but one of the many reasons I especially loved her as a character was that instead of scoffing at her needlework like most headstrong leading ladies in fantasy these days, Sandry loved her needlework so much her governess sometimes had to urge her to work on something <i>else</i>. (I might have made that part up, actually, it's been a while since I read them-- Laura, Emma, Kate, please correct me if it's only in my imagination). In any case, Sandry ends up having a special magical talent with all manner of threadcraft. I hope, in that spirit, to work some "magic" of my own with my Sandry. :-)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But what about <a href="http://threadmaiden.blogspot.com/2011/04/d-is-for-darth-stitch.html">Darth Stitch</a>? you may be asking. Well, <i>technically</i>, Darth Stitch is still my mother's, so his fate will be up to her. As much as I love and have come to respect him, as much as he's taught me, the student's ambitions are starting to surpass the master's capabilities, I fear. It's high time to move on. I'm going to suggest that we give him to my aunt and cousins, who are always coming over here to patch things. Not that I mind having them, quite the contrary. But still. The desire to give good machines to good homes is universal.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So here's my new sewing station, all assembled and ready to go. I can't wait to get started!!!</div>

<br />
Zhaan's costume is not for the faint of heart. I think it's pretty clear why:<br />
<br />
Basically, I think if you wanted to really pull off Zhaan for a convention, you would have to plan on not sleeping for up to 36 hours.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIXPSGmHGQA75W-08IcEqtVum7Sb6CSp_5FFrmQWfOnGYo1ps-OTPOfjs2_wOuSQqYk0NBybKxnxBxe-p7nIIvwfbubHuvP6iDf53H5axHCMP7smJwZJFPoqEPNuqcaTXwIDi9jHTWUJXz/s1600/zhaan1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIXPSGmHGQA75W-08IcEqtVum7Sb6CSp_5FFrmQWfOnGYo1ps-OTPOfjs2_wOuSQqYk0NBybKxnxBxe-p7nIIvwfbubHuvP6iDf53H5axHCMP7smJwZJFPoqEPNuqcaTXwIDi9jHTWUJXz/s320/zhaan1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Zhaan wears a number of costumes through her three-year tenure on the show, most of them in the blue/grey color spectrum (when she's meditating, she doesn't wear anything at all!) The simple robe with fancy collar shown below is probably the simplest from a construction perspective, but even getting the mottled effect of the fabric would be a challenge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB246VTeSQFhVP3UV6U-XeAxCmWAIq8LPWnAQrjQw1IowdtKPS7pqVV-kQO9tQSCbpMQaSBtmJe4UDpHkYLXQ4UyjAs0w4tMlwflN52k0qjkX6G9dLRg9h9s2JYIH2lTatNx5M4bwm2eNt/s1600/zhaan2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB246VTeSQFhVP3UV6U-XeAxCmWAIq8LPWnAQrjQw1IowdtKPS7pqVV-kQO9tQSCbpMQaSBtmJe4UDpHkYLXQ4UyjAs0w4tMlwflN52k0qjkX6G9dLRg9h9s2JYIH2lTatNx5M4bwm2eNt/s320/zhaan2.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>
<br />
My favorite detail about Zhaan's dress aesthetic are the silver rings she wears on all ten digits. <br />
<br />
But yeah, between the bald cap, full facial and hand/foot makeup, colored contacts, fabric dyeing, not to mention having to dedicate the hours just to <i>don</i> the thing... nope, I'm certainly not that dedicated!<br />
<br />
Believe it or not, though, some people are. I tip my hat to them!<br />
<br />
<br />
And with that, we are finished! Thank you all for following along. This has been a fun, enlightening, and at times exhausting exercise. I got a few new inspirations and I hoped maybe a helpful tip or two to anyone attempting these costumes.<br />
<br />
Soon we will resume ordinary project-related posts. I have a lot of exciting stuff on the horizon!Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-50692110783337520142012-04-28T08:00:00.000-04:002012-04-28T08:00:02.367-04:00Y is for YoSaffBridge<i>"Oh please, no one died last time</i>."<br />

I confess, one of the reasons I chose this for my Y entry was just so I could explain the name.<br />
<br />
"YoSaffBridge" is a con artist from <i>Firefly</i>. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Unnecessary photo, but it's one of my favorite frames in all of <i>Firefly</i> so I decided to include it. If there was any chance at all in a "YoSaffBridge" getting recognition at a convention, the 'Saffron' version would probably be the best bet. You might have to learn to crochet that sweater, though.</div>

I like "Bridget" best of the YoSaffBridge ensembles. The horizontal ribbing on that blouse would be an experiment in and of itself, but all in all, it's just <i>pretty</i>. I would wear this out in real life too. </div>
<br />
<br />
Finally, our slippery gal convinces Mal & Co to help her on one of her cons, and in the process they run into the man from whom they're stealing, who she introduces as, you guessed it, her husband. This time her name is "Yolanda".<br />

This is an extra-special post for me, because I can truly speak as an authority on our "X" character. Xari Oth'ilin is one of the main characters of the fantasy series that Laura Josephsen and I are writing together!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Xari is an orphan, and grew up shunned from a young age for her mixed heritage. She has a new family now, however-- an adopted father who taught her swordplay and a fairy guardian who awakened her to be a Speaker-- someone who can talk to four special species of animal. Of the twelve, Xari most especially represents the otter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a child, Xari was bitter and rebellious, but the friendship and counsel of Burin, her father, and Asheford, her guardian have smoothed her rough edges over the years. She is compassionate and dedicated, a talented fighter and a faithful friend. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The picture below is a portrait of Xari that we commissioned for the Book One's release back in 2010. I love it so much! The artist is Jacob Grant. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is an excerpt from Book 1 of our series, which describes Xari's appearance:</div>

Despite being at least a hand shorter than anyone
else around, Xari knew that people were often wary of her appearance. Her hair, which she had grown down past
her waist, was kept in dozens of braids, and her right eyebrow was pierced,
both in the style of the Westerlons.
She had learned much of the Westerlons in the past years, and was no
longer afraid to look like one.
She didn't wear dresses as a proper young lady should--she found
breeches much more practical for the work she had to do. Here in Ithrin, strangers weren't
scared of her, but they were oftentimes cautious. They had only dealt with the occasional Westerlon warrior,
and didn't have the fear that the people of Threnphol and Réol did.</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So you can see, Jacob's interpretation of Xari is pretty in keeping with the book. The braids are highly important, at least if you want to do "Book 1" Xari. Also important are the swords! She fights with two. (For an eyebrow piercing, I would just do something fake-tattoo style. I am not <i>that</i> dedicated to accurate costumes!!)</div>

And for that price, I might be willing to put up with the trim, to be honest. A basic peasant blouse is something that's pretty easy to find, though, depending on the time of year. (I know I didn't spend much time gushing about Sarah. The truth is, since I have a huge fangirl crush on Chuck Bartowski, I have an irrational resentment of Sarah and her gorgeousness and ability to quell a rebellion with a spork). Have you ever seen Rogers and Hammerstein's <i>Cinderella</i>? The song "The Stepsisters' Lament?"<br />

<br />
So anyone who watches even a single episode of <i>Scooby Doo</i> (since they all pretty much have the same plot) knows very well that the only member of Mystery, Inc. to actually <i>solve </i>mysteries is Velma<i>.</i><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf1rv4L-gIh4KACz_EHw9isiv7EIl7TR8EbpmfJEifG-et94Vy8IwBtaMA5bXHalh3KaqvnNoKrTx__B0sfBuJYqT1ppoQctP_gmHFjz_zC-Ks1INaI6lQtLTLgDD7LSux1z1L4-yf0-TR/s1600/velma1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf1rv4L-gIh4KACz_EHw9isiv7EIl7TR8EbpmfJEifG-et94Vy8IwBtaMA5bXHalh3KaqvnNoKrTx__B0sfBuJYqT1ppoQctP_gmHFjz_zC-Ks1INaI6lQtLTLgDD7LSux1z1L4-yf0-TR/s1600/velma1.jpg" /></a><i> </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This is a great and easy costume to assemble if you want something, well, great and easy. Personally, I see no reason to obsess over getting the cut and style of the sweater and skirt <i>exactly</i> right. Observe the slight differences in the two incarnations of Velma shown below:<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's a different sweater and also different shoes. The bottom sweater is more "cartoon" accurate, but I love both of them. Really, I think getting Velma right is more about colors, the haircut, and those unforgettable square glasses!</div>

<br />
You won't after you meet Dolores Umbridge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIzLL5J79zs5JVgRXzLOuhtuLQnEm-spDQNhKxLJS3FGHNoAknmKy55AHWhDatK-h30slXens2GK5JPULPvo5fDRlnXuG-GHdrv_x1blb9xAFeXqKSXRuBLMMMcke53HdIQMdSecwtX8iT/s1600/umbridge1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIzLL5J79zs5JVgRXzLOuhtuLQnEm-spDQNhKxLJS3FGHNoAknmKy55AHWhDatK-h30slXens2GK5JPULPvo5fDRlnXuG-GHdrv_x1blb9xAFeXqKSXRuBLMMMcke53HdIQMdSecwtX8iT/s400/umbridge1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Okay, well, that's not precisely true. I've met Dolores, and despite her very best efforts, I still do like pink. But that is neither here nor there.<br />
<br />
I actually think if I ever chose a Harry Potter costume to try, it might be Umbridge, for a couple of reasons. While I despise the woman, her costumes are pretty difficult to mistake, and they'd be a fun addition to HP costume groups. Also, they would teach me suit-making techniques.<br />
<br />
I work in an office environment, and while we're not required to wear suits, I sometimes like to wear them all the same, just because they make me feel super grown-up and professional and empowered. Alas, because I only wear skirts, I have come to understand just how difficult it is to find matching suit skirts. Except at the Limited, which makes stuff that is beautiful, but only comes in the sizes models wear, and is usually so short I think the "professional" part of the appeal is lost.<br />
<br />
I did manage to find a wonderful store called Kaspar which carried beautiful matching suits (pants, skirts, and even dresses all with mix and match coordinating jackets) but the nearest outlet is over 200 miles away.<br />
<br />
So. That being said. Learning to make a suit would be worth my own personal time. At this point in my life I'm only interested in making costumes, not "real" clothes, so Dolores might be a good way to tuck suck skills away for such a time in the future when that proclivity would change.<br />
<br />
If you've recovered from that first bout of nauseating pink, here's another:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw69GU9mXAAOYbcn63Wz1VyOBGAYLAj9SePFroU3eboV7iM2bKAsqUmtdN4emUzjKzOd9d7y0lAEkfQcXOVdCulhpIbgcuC6KREOKomHCJPB7rHCbVKq2yCUhHosC6TSaBsUECV-jk-k21/s1600/Umbridge2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw69GU9mXAAOYbcn63Wz1VyOBGAYLAj9SePFroU3eboV7iM2bKAsqUmtdN4emUzjKzOd9d7y0lAEkfQcXOVdCulhpIbgcuC6KREOKomHCJPB7rHCbVKq2yCUhHosC6TSaBsUECV-jk-k21/s320/Umbridge2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
While this is not a suit <i>cut</i> I would wear, it nonetheless uses suiting fabric, special pockets, cuffs, etc.<br />
<br />
"Suiting" is, quite simply, a fabric used for suits. It's usually woven and has a very nice lie. Tweed could conceivably fall into this category. Do a search for "pink suiting" and you'll get lots of horrific Dolores choices <a href="http://www.sewyouthinkyoucandance.com/servlet/the-3221/Beautiful-Suiting-Fabric-100-pct-/Detail">such as this</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1269-products-15132.php?page_id=865">Vogue 1269</a> has a good short jacket pattern for Dolores. I'm also very fond of <a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1237-products-14148.php?page_id=865">Vogue 1237</a> for that very "buttoned up" feeling that Dolores expresses in her manner of dress. This <a href="http://butterick.mccall.com/b5690-products-14762.php?page_id=154">Butterick</a> pattern (5690) has an amazing coat that could work. Really, there are endless mix and match possibilities!<br />
<br />

Some Harry Potter!<br />
<br />
Funny thing about Harry Potter. I like the films, but "visually" the books and movies are different for me, probably because more people are described as wearing robes in the books than they do in the movies. Is that just me? Not that I'm raising a protest. Robes are... well, less cool than what Nymphadora Tonks is wearing in the following two photos:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9GtmFXHmXcGfXhK5WbEeMXG3UJkh2kz8pwieb6qALA9kANQKN9xwMe6As9Zq97q3SOy0P0HMtyjy_k_2ZDheSB4wDf0tCzjoavDxByp-5ezShHMudtrwrLE6K56qa_9LNisUj1iIddlUL/s1600/Tonks1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9GtmFXHmXcGfXhK5WbEeMXG3UJkh2kz8pwieb6qALA9kANQKN9xwMe6As9Zq97q3SOy0P0HMtyjy_k_2ZDheSB4wDf0tCzjoavDxByp-5ezShHMudtrwrLE6K56qa_9LNisUj1iIddlUL/s400/Tonks1.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
I guess technically the pink thing could be a robe, but I'd call it a coat, myself.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihwincKoTmFh_Vv_Jvhp3z1fKrr5I9svFmt6DdxH4ULE5A6HQ3HX_JuAQ8ffZcD2F1SlPbcpHX5U2FVVEXXGZ2ldNINm9j_SrPTTMXp1_qJVqY8SPvHMGAjDxlNYQHUrrYZsGXLbdoQUwL/s1600/Tonks2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihwincKoTmFh_Vv_Jvhp3z1fKrr5I9svFmt6DdxH4ULE5A6HQ3HX_JuAQ8ffZcD2F1SlPbcpHX5U2FVVEXXGZ2ldNINm9j_SrPTTMXp1_qJVqY8SPvHMGAjDxlNYQHUrrYZsGXLbdoQUwL/s400/Tonks2.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
In any case, as crazy and challenging as those two costumes might be, I wanted to use this space to talk about book interpretation versus movie interpretation. Most of the costumers I know and admire try to emulate something a professional film costumer has come up with, and that's cool. But you don't have to go with the above visions to be Tonks. In fact, I think she would be quite easy to pull off in a few simple, cost-effective steps:<br />
<br />
Jeans<br />
Punk rock t-shirt<br />
Brilliant-colored wig<br />
Pig nose<br />
Wand<br />
<br />
(oh, fine, and throw in a robe, though I'm sure Tonks isn't the sort to wear her robe 24/7. Her father was a Muggle, after all). <br />
<br />
All of these things combined will help you really stand out as Tonks, I think. JK Rowling gave us so many scrumptious little tidbits about her capabilities and personality.Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-50178606651550709372012-04-21T08:00:00.000-04:002012-04-21T09:10:50.009-04:00S is for Sybil Crawley<i>Downton Abbey</i> is all the rage these days. And so too is <i>Downton Abbey</i> fashion! (In the costuming world, anyway). I watched the entire series to-date in the span of about a week. The letter "S" was a good opportunity to squeeze <i>Downton</i> period costume love into this month's tributes.<br />

<br />
One of the things that's especially neat about Sybil as the subject of an entry is that her costumes especially reflect her character. Sybil is a very progressive young women, interested in women's rights and new ideas. One of the most famous scenes is when Sybil comes to dinner in her new "surprise" frock and causes a minor scandal:<br />

<br />
Although I am by no means a fashion historian, in preparing this post I have reinforced some things I vaguely suspected about a misconception surrounding the fashion of Downton Abbey. Namely, that people call it Edwardian, and it's not. Not really. "Titanic-era" is better, at least for the first season, since it opens with the sinking of the Titanic. "Pre-WWI" might serve as well. The truth of the matter is that this particular time period is the bridge between true Edwardian fashion and the famous "flapper" era of the 1920's.<br />
<br />
Maybe we could officially call it "Downton Abbey" fashion from now on? <br />

<br />
There are some great starter choices for patterns out there, and I'm sure as the show gains popularity there will be more cropping up in the next couple of years.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-5974-misses-costume.aspx">Simplicity 8399</a><br />
<a href="http://sew-n-sewpatterns.mybisi.com/product/butterick-4212-victorian-edwardian-costume-pattern-titanic">Butterick 4212</a> (I'm not sure I'd pay the price this site is asking, unless further research proved it to be a super rare, hard-to-come-by pattern and you simply <i>had</i> to have it)<br />
<a href="http://www.pastpatterns.com/1900.html">Past Patterns 1900-1920's</a> Here you'd want to be careful to choose clothing from the 1914-1920 timeframe, more toward the bottom of the list. It's easy enough to see which ones are more 'Downton-esque' There's even a pajama pattern that would serve to make Sybil's harem pants!<br />
<br />
Were I to want to make a Sybil Crawley costume... well, of all those shown in this post I like the lawn party dress the best, but the nurse's costume would be a fun slice of history to recreate.Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-22859300694864141222012-04-20T08:00:00.000-04:002012-04-20T08:00:14.509-04:00R is for Red Riding HoodWe began our A-Z series with <i>Once Upon A Time</i>, and now it's come 'round again.<br />
<br />
This is also a good time to bring up the fickleness of a costumer's life, or at least of mine. I mentioned when I posted the Rosie Cotton write-up that I was definitely going to do Rosie for Dragon Con this year, but between the time I wrote that entry and now, my resolve has taken a slight turn<br />
<br />
Now I'm going to do Red Riding Hood (or "Red").<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWmOGZC9q-zDRxVyn1_roTTzS57JvGqONphz9F5LRdO4Z2kTskiIYk0LtkJ_9SchXzIdELNd91gsfuDKMOCvtN0kE7mySCEysyWEWAIRbxTDthKSpX1U6E2Pw4gvLFUBBOVihtlyDDIfC9/s1600/Flagged-0.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWmOGZC9q-zDRxVyn1_roTTzS57JvGqONphz9F5LRdO4Z2kTskiIYk0LtkJ_9SchXzIdELNd91gsfuDKMOCvtN0kE7mySCEysyWEWAIRbxTDthKSpX1U6E2Pw4gvLFUBBOVihtlyDDIfC9/s320/Flagged-0.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Why? Well, first off, the two costumes have a lot of similarities: peasant skirt, blouse, and corset. I could actually wear Red's costume to the Evening in Bree party and pass myself off as a "generic" hobbit. Secondly, though, and more important, I actually kind of <i>look</i> like Red.<br />
<br />
Our faces are pretty different, but she's really tall and she has long dark hair. There are so few 'tall girls' out there to cosplay that I just cannot resist. Plus, I already found a cosplay group to join for photoshoots and whatnot, so <i>Red Riding Hood </i>it is!<br />
<br />
So far on the show, Red has two distinct ensembles, including two distinct capes. I'm going to be doing the first one, pictured above, but I thought I might post pictures and a basic breakdown of both of them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAUYvG8Am3w4XC22ZaEU_SKtUxipjFb41Hq53PTIpyhPQtJD9xpa1aCfR-m5Czyd8mqZDjzHRP9R60LUhN7joEqGLZ8jRlR4KFCL_SyF2LlHXVsuMomgPD0rMlJN7UNqmPLLUNR0w3fNUH/s1600/Picture+13.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
The first one is the one featured in Red's showcase episode "Red-Handed"<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAUYvG8Am3w4XC22ZaEU_SKtUxipjFb41Hq53PTIpyhPQtJD9xpa1aCfR-m5Czyd8mqZDjzHRP9R60LUhN7joEqGLZ8jRlR4KFCL_SyF2LlHXVsuMomgPD0rMlJN7UNqmPLLUNR0w3fNUH/s1600/Picture+13.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAUYvG8Am3w4XC22ZaEU_SKtUxipjFb41Hq53PTIpyhPQtJD9xpa1aCfR-m5Czyd8mqZDjzHRP9R60LUhN7joEqGLZ8jRlR4KFCL_SyF2LlHXVsuMomgPD0rMlJN7UNqmPLLUNR0w3fNUH/s320/Picture+13.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The hood is the most elaborate part of this costume. It's gorgeous red embossed velvet. Considering I have a much easier alternative, I wouldn't want to even think of trying this until I found some really great fabric to do it justice. And that's not all. The picture below gives a really great idea of the full spread of the cloak and why doing it accurately would mean even more of a fabric headache.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You can kind of see the lower part of the jacket here. You also get a rough idea of how her skirt is constructed. There's an underskirt with a design, gathered up slightly on one side (I don't yet know the technique to accomplish this look), and a sort of skin tone/orangey light brown skirt around the outside.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Don't you just love the "Snow White, Rose Red" imagery here?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(This is my fave ep of <i>Once Upon a Time </i>to date)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was the best picture I could find of the underskirt for design reference. It's an oatmeal color with little earth tone flowers. (In this picture she's swapped cloaks with Snow White for plot purposes)</div>

The second Red Riding Hood ensemble is the one I'm going to try and make. It's the first we see her wearing in order of episode air, but the second of her two outfits chronologically in the story.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuaFv-6gTzI0ShZYbRJMVpT_IBId2YCOlGNl8bgIczMzLm8H1wm2jHY2xyKJAD-hEm-Dl_3bFhTC1KThUXB_c-2nmO3dRx_yjbGTJkcfGzMUPhPgXllkeww3IL5EXpHxsCvfCbcklNP4-p/s1600/Flagged-5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuaFv-6gTzI0ShZYbRJMVpT_IBId2YCOlGNl8bgIczMzLm8H1wm2jHY2xyKJAD-hEm-Dl_3bFhTC1KThUXB_c-2nmO3dRx_yjbGTJkcfGzMUPhPgXllkeww3IL5EXpHxsCvfCbcklNP4-p/s320/Flagged-5.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a good head-to-toe reference. I could have sworn at some point that her skirt was made of vertical stripes in two subtly different shades of red, but I 'm not at all certain now. I was probably just glancing at it too fast and mistook the gathers for stripes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxddmNc6t_Ol61YeZphUtzY3jBEGmquUUno3VZhvfKr5ZjXfmPxwMPorSFHcI13yQen0BnZri7fi5YDaGuWBf6F9MnIqlSsSNDyqYqQ50Bx0qxYMj34n6rrdjsrjMXAyGBaK3UGodE0kIm/s1600/Flagged-6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxddmNc6t_Ol61YeZphUtzY3jBEGmquUUno3VZhvfKr5ZjXfmPxwMPorSFHcI13yQen0BnZri7fi5YDaGuWBf6F9MnIqlSsSNDyqYqQ50Bx0qxYMj34n6rrdjsrjMXAyGBaK3UGodE0kIm/s640/Flagged-6.png" width="467" /></a></div>
<br />
The cloak is plain red wool, but with an interesting border of what looks like purple, pink, and red feathers (or feathery material) pressed down flat along the edge to give it some texture.<br />
<br />
The corset has beautiful garment clasps, which I can't wait to play with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis_CS92gxkYbidEMa7jc5JJoDOBn4XOGGxgJ1g-MzOpuV_dz5_bqQIJGu9iYpQZDlh2uujssfqWVUZLkUTJsziKZF4D4pHk7HtM14hHVQApQUo11MpBqcmMPjGrm4PYKYQbR-T7vAOqbev/s1600/Flagged-7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis_CS92gxkYbidEMa7jc5JJoDOBn4XOGGxgJ1g-MzOpuV_dz5_bqQIJGu9iYpQZDlh2uujssfqWVUZLkUTJsziKZF4D4pHk7HtM14hHVQApQUo11MpBqcmMPjGrm4PYKYQbR-T7vAOqbev/s400/Flagged-7.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I'm going to be working on this costume later in the summer, I'll worry about relaying costume and fabric specifics until I discover them step by step. For sure I've already got a pattern for the skirt. I also have a cloak pattern, but I'll have to determine if the hood is big enough. I do have a corset pattern, but it has a squire neckline and doesn't come to nearly as acute a point at the bottom as Red's, so it remains to be seen whether I'll try to buy a closer pattern or just play with the patterns I already have on hand. Rapunzel did give me exhaustive bodice experience. One of the hardest things, I think, is going to be fitting the corset just right to where the garment clasps leave that nice narrow open space down the front.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for our Red Riding Hood journey, coming later 2012!Faith Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7539836551403820446.post-37270656111050813372012-04-19T08:00:00.000-04:002012-04-19T08:00:00.833-04:00Q is for QorraI enjoyed the movie TRON: Legacy (though I had to do a bit of quick "catch-up" since the entire Tron franchise was new to me as of that year). I especially enjoyed the character of Qorra, a computer program in the digital world who is more than what she seems. She has a combination of competence and innocence that makes her very endearing.<br />
<br />
Like all folks in the TRON world, she also has a pretty interesting costume, one of TRON's famous "light suits"<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSSCIHRqKnVy5B32NulZUHFgK7jEOO2p_vu7g_SeZGlSv-jWYhYXJswiB7AG9yTTSuF9rgxOx8R-lZnF_hp3qF8JV25_y9UV90suBgaD-ngZYc1UlCOU3OW0-LAVvd7QVB8mu_N_GB_kKJ/s1600/Picture+12.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSSCIHRqKnVy5B32NulZUHFgK7jEOO2p_vu7g_SeZGlSv-jWYhYXJswiB7AG9yTTSuF9rgxOx8R-lZnF_hp3qF8JV25_y9UV90suBgaD-ngZYc1UlCOU3OW0-LAVvd7QVB8mu_N_GB_kKJ/s1600/Picture+12.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off, like many costumes I think about, I wouldn't wear it "as is" because of my personal dress standards. It's much too skin tight and though I don't think I've mentioned it in this series so far, I only wear skirts and dresses out and about. So some costumes are flat out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, if I <i>really, really</i> wanted to do Qorra, I know what I would do to pull it off. Have a closer look at the photo below. Note the bottom hem of her tunic, how it slopes down asymmetrically. If I were adapting the costume I would simply turn this into a knee-length skirt. And also make the entire thing a wee bit less form-fitting. Problem solved!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The real reason the idea of a TRON costume is so much fun is because of the white stripes. By using reflective fabric or safety tape for the white stripes (such as construction workers, or police officers sometimes wear) you can make it so the costume actually "glows" in certain lights. And then go find a party with a black light. LOL</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />Fabric: Well, I'm not wearing actual leather. Pleather, I suppose? I've not delved exhaustively into this fabric class. The aforementioned reflective tape, of course. Black leather knee-high wedge heel boots are easy enough to find too, though finding something cost-friendly might be a little trickier. Gloves. A short black wig to round things off.<br />
<br />
.... this costume would get expensive really fast.<br />

How could any fangirl's "dream" costume list be complete without something from her exhaustive collection of breathtaking ensembles?<br />
<br />
There are SO MANY to choose from, but thinking on the matter for the purposes of this write-up, I decided that the Padmé dress I would most like <i>at this point in my life</i> is her initial Senatorial gown from <i>Episode II: Attack of the Clones</i>.<br />

Renaissance meets Africa. Only in Star Wars! Gotta love it.<br />

The Good News: The costumes is awesome.<br />
<br />
The Bad News: The costumes is expensive and complicated. Once again we butt heads with the infamous Trisha Beggar, Star Wars prequel costume designer. Darn her!<br />

<br />
The <b>REALLY </b>good news (for me) is that because this is a Star Wars costume, it means that a bajillion people out there have already done the work and documented their efforts handily on the internet. In the case of this costume, I found the mother lode. So I defer to the following post for any and all commentary, suggestions, and tidbits regarding Padme and her gorgeous, nightmarish clothing:<br />

<br />
"But wait!" you may be saying if you're a student of Egyptian mythology. "Osiris is the Egyptian god of the afterlife and he's male!"<br />
<br />
True.<br />
<br />
He's also a Goa'uld who took a <i>female</i> host by the name of Sarah Gardner about five years after the Stargate was uncovered on Earth.<br />
<br />

See? Now he's a she. And like all Goa'uld, ostentatious doesn't even <i>begin</i> to describe her dress sense.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All of these outfits are fun, and varying levels of complicated. I really do love the necklace on that second one, but were I to ever tackle our disgraced System Lord, I'd go with her white "Egypt" outfit. It's the easiest, and also probably the most recognizable amongst Stargate SG-1 fans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All the screencaps below are taken from the climactic episode of Season 4 called "The Curse" in which Daniel Jackson learns the horrible truth-- that his former girlfriend and colleague Sarah has been taken over by the long-dormant Goa'uld Osiris. She makes her escape before Daniel can rescue Sarah, now a prisoner in her own body.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The scene is beautifully filmed, especially the lighting, which puts this beautiful costume to great advantage. There's a refreshing, regal, timeless simplicity to the white linen, and I love how it seems to reflect both the masculine and feminine influences in Osiris's new manifestation.</div>

<br />
If you look closely, the linen is ribbed. The fabric is the same for all three pieces.<br />
<br />
The great thing about these pieces? They're super easy to find patterns for. I've posted the first three I found to be acceptable below, but I'm sure even more browsing will yield a wide range of optional patterns. Heck, maybe you could find one with all three together!<br />
<br />
Coat: <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-5901-misses-fleece-jackets.aspx">Simplicity 2208 jacket with hood </a>(Just make it longer)<br />
Tank: <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-4705-misses-separates.aspx">New Look 6950</a> <br />

<br />
The other thing I love about this (from a costumer's perspective) is that the necklace would be quite easy too. Plain silver band chokers with black and pearl beads.<br />
<br />
And if you don't have short, blond, curly hair? A wig, definitely a wig.<br />

I find this hilarious, since, well, together they spell "NO"<br />
<br />
Just say NO to evil, kids.<br />
<br />
But by all means, say yes to evil's dress sense.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
First up: <b>Nimueh</b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEght21QTv7pQv1s47APaH9Q8xkAy18Ijz-VChAUUhYxeVdfLJVFsj4k63Zojx5XAft2yM_fydxFHojXE0iI26pyNi8yEEMDDoi7I2c-SL-XIJ7CfhqHPZFBp0MNVT18dN0H33AY1Wakn6Vt/s1600/Picture+7.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEght21QTv7pQv1s47APaH9Q8xkAy18Ijz-VChAUUhYxeVdfLJVFsj4k63Zojx5XAft2yM_fydxFHojXE0iI26pyNi8yEEMDDoi7I2c-SL-XIJ7CfhqHPZFBp0MNVT18dN0H33AY1Wakn6Vt/s320/Picture+7.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
Nimueh isn't always evil. It depends on what school of Arthurian legend one subscribes to. Most usually she's Merlin's lover and downfall, sometimes rival, sometimes good, sometimes evil.<br />
<br />
In BBC's <i>Merlin</i>, which we introduced in our Gwen post, Nimueh is a first season nemesis to Merlin, and they most certainly do not fall in love. She is played by the superbly beautiful and talented Michelle Ryan, whom I would love to see more of in general. This Nimueh is one of my favorite characters because, as an antagonist, she has many layers, and substantial motivations for her evil. Truly, sometimes her attitudes are downright sympathetic, though Merlin does take her down in the end. Too bad-- she could have taught her successors in the evil sorceress dept a few things about nuance in villainy.<br />
<br />
Her skirt must have taken lessons from her personality, because it too has many shifting layers:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf7UzCkN6wG2m6QRfzn9M-7wHeKkeX4H4x2K683SzgWa0d00QnRhhveKbMkhyphenhyphenhzA_xdOulkl-HY-AW-XoOd52ysmMef9qv_Rn4A-KQkg8d4ihDycDVVRwEdN5ecUd3V6uNLci_4f6TdK6p/s1600/Picture+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf7UzCkN6wG2m6QRfzn9M-7wHeKkeX4H4x2K683SzgWa0d00QnRhhveKbMkhyphenhyphenhzA_xdOulkl-HY-AW-XoOd52ysmMef9qv_Rn4A-KQkg8d4ihDycDVVRwEdN5ecUd3V6uNLci_4f6TdK6p/s1600/Picture+1.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh, man, I love this dress so much.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCO3oUkUHbdkLFCfggISR1Zh_BRKZLu1gGRpfANQ486bh6TAXTAzlM3vXa6B68WdQnaBwhspT2p5MNCbvnXhBx-1MuJ7SYJgnOzlTDndSNVu2aWw50YNzQSac7cwYSBt7dzEuYpRmjrQnX/s1600/Picture+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCO3oUkUHbdkLFCfggISR1Zh_BRKZLu1gGRpfANQ486bh6TAXTAzlM3vXa6B68WdQnaBwhspT2p5MNCbvnXhBx-1MuJ7SYJgnOzlTDndSNVu2aWw50YNzQSac7cwYSBt7dzEuYpRmjrQnX/s1600/Picture+2.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Though she looks very cold, doesn't she?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-mnulE7ci9qKKw9nbl4ooVt8kVRArRHsm4nmVO9JJf_J-7aPjp5fySHFufz64UMwEt4GDnXdq49tbceKYgtWKYc8Hd7GzQMELMB527OagvqngdMCwVLTEaSF94H8aujclMnu9MjF1mxKa/s1600/Picture+3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-mnulE7ci9qKKw9nbl4ooVt8kVRArRHsm4nmVO9JJf_J-7aPjp5fySHFufz64UMwEt4GDnXdq49tbceKYgtWKYc8Hd7GzQMELMB527OagvqngdMCwVLTEaSF94H8aujclMnu9MjF1mxKa/s320/Picture+3.png" width="290" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's a good close-up to get a better idea of the texture on the bodice.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Okay, so down to business. For starters, I'd construct the dress with two different kinds of fabric. An underdress in something with a good, flattering drape (like rayon). For the overlay, experiment with organza or tulle. I probably wouldn't kill myself getting the perfect "tattered" look like hers, though if anyone has any ideas, by all means, elaborate in the comments.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To me, the mulberry color is crucial in recreating this costume. I would go the extra mile and dye it if I needed to to get it right. I'd probably mix in some purple in the overlay as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And of course we need a pattern. For once I found something that will serve nicely:<a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-1951-costumes.aspx"> Simplicity 3632</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It has variations for the sweetheart neckline and sheer fabric overlay. After sewing the longer length, it would be a simple matter indeed to hack the skirt in pieces to the knee or mid-thigh and use liberal amounts of fraystop to finish them off. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
But wait! That's not all.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Let's not kid ourselves. Her hair is just as awesome, if not more, than her dress. I mean, come on:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh yeah. Doesn't she know it?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
