D is for Darth Stitch

My dear readers, I am pleased to introduce to you Darth Stitch.

(My kitty, Lucy, also makes a guest appearance in the background).

Yes, I gave my sewing machine the name of a Sith Lord. Just last week, in fact. After a five-time attempt to do a simple long, straight seam with disastrous results, I concluded that it must be drawing upon the Dark Side of the Force. I posted my suspicions on Facebook and my friend Laura's younger brother suggested the name 'Darth Stitch'. (Laura is also my co-author-- this paranthetical side is brought to you by blatant self-promotion: WE WROTE A BOOK!!!)

The more I've thought about it over the past few days, the more I find the name to be perfect on so many levels. Not only is it a sewing word, it's also the name of another fictional troublemaker:

"Who, me?"

How cool is that?

Anyway, I should probably confess that the reason I was having so much trouble that day is because Darth Stitch's thread tension was way out of whack. I had unwittingly changed it a few weeks before. I broke out the sewing machine after a long hiatus and I couldn't remember which nob was which. Thinking this nob was the stitch length, I dialed it down and didn't think anything of it when I found the one I actually wanted. These are the kind of things that happen in my "reckless abandon" approach to the time-honored art of sewing. I should also add that it was my mother who helped me to solve the mystery, which made her feel very good because she's usually the one coming to me with frantic frustration over her computer. Frankly, I'm not sure how I managed to get through those few in between weeks without everything coming to a head long before.

So in conclusion, Darth Stitch was unusually tense that day and naming him so villainously was probably ungracious of me. The name, however, is just too nerdy and precious. He's stuck with it now.

  1. That's okay. You've set him up for a redemptive arc that pays off nicely at the end of episode six. Somewhere, John Williams is probably writing the soundtrack already. :)

  2. I know the post was about Darth Stitch, but for my money, that can't hold a candle to the idea of "sewing with reckless abandon."

For no reason I can explain, that phrase made my heart feel full.

Okay, now I've a vision of someone pulling together fabric with wild sweeps of the hand, wind gusting past, and Flight of the Valkyries blasting as they go.

Must admit, didn't expect a stitching post to take me such places.

    Thanks for the lift!

    Best,

P.S. Cued up the Valkyries tune. Playing it now. Ta!
